In this series we are going to travel around Tunisia and say what we found to be most enjoyable and worthwhile. In Part 1 we started with the little beach resort of Hammamet. Then we continued by going to Sidi Bou Said. Now we go to Sousse, a charming fishing town and port well south of Tunis. There is quite a bit to see in Sousse so I recommend at least 4 nights there. The Bou Jafaar beach is nice for bathing. The souk in the medina is so special it has been declared a Unesco world heritage site. The Dar Essid museum gives a good insight into life in Tunisia in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Ribat is a well preserved islamic fortification. The great mosque is open to the public, but you are expected to dress conservatively with no shorts or bare arms allowed. A nice hotel to stay at on the beach with special all inclusive deals available is the Hotel Marhaba Beach. You can book it here at this link: https://tripadvisor.tpk.mx/IOphGyIZ We were going to stay there but didn´t because they do not allow dogs. As we were not having our friendly samoyed who is part of our family rejected, we chose to stay in the Dar Lekbira Boutique hotel where pets are welcome. Here we found the Tunisian style decor and atmosphere to be very nice and the food was excellent. You can book here if you want to:

A woman walking along the city walls surrounding the old part of the holy city Kairouan.
Kairouan is the holiest city in Tunisia and a visit there from Sousse is a must, along with Djem where there is a beautifully preserved amphitheatre. A full day tour that covers all the main sites including lunch and entrance tickets can be booked here: https://getyourguide.tpk.mx/SgslqYWI

The amphitheatre at Djem. The hole on the stage was where they used to throw people to the lions and gladiators.

This is where the lions and gladiators were kept.
A fun thing to do in Sousse is to take a culinary class where you get to make and eat typical Tunisian dishes. You can book this experience at: https://getyourguide.tpk.mx/SgslqYWI
Another fun thing to do in Sousse is to take the train to Sfax and back. The journey will be about two hours. While in Sfax spend time in the medina, the largest in Tunisia. Go round the archaeological museum in the city hall. Visit the Kasbah. Spend time wandering round Sfax Beb Bhar where you will find lots of restaurants and bars. Then take the train back to Sousse in time for dinner. You can buy a first class ticket but don´t expect luxury. This will be a cultural experience and will be interesting. Turn up early, in spite of your seat reservation, as people tend to occupy any seat on a first come basis. Buy the return ticket in the station several days before you plan to travel, - it won´t be expensive but make sure you can pay in cash. If you are not thrilled to do a train adventure, you could try getting to Sfax in a shared taxi ( a louage); they leave from a fixed point, and wait until they are full before going. You can buy two places and sit in the front seat alone, and your journey will be more comfortable that way. Alternatively, you could for about triple the price, hire your own grand taxi to take you alone without any other passengers.
